Hello Spain! A Hotel Guide to Spain Madrid, Barcelona & 24 Other Cities $50-$99 a Night

As mentioned on page 28, all the restaurants listed below were selected by Mickey Arzaga, his wife Karmele and 2 children (Alicia & Monica). They are a wonderful Spanish-American family who commute between Madrid, Spain and Orange County, California, USA. Mickey has compiled a list of many tried and proven affordable (3000ptas pp) restaurants in the heart of Madrid. Because Mickey & his family are bilingual, they help make it easy for me to order and also to understand what I was ordering and how it was cooked. I totally surrendered to Mickey & his family's knowledge of Spanish food. By the end of my time in Madrid, I developed a new appreciation & appetite for the culinary skills of the Spanish. I was fortunate to have met Mickey & his family because it set the tone for the rest of my trip. They also helped me to locate and identify other fabulous affordable restaurants in some of the other cities I was researching for this book. With the help of my Spanish menu reader Eating & Drinking in Spanish (see books recommended), and Mickey's tips, I was experiencing some good eating. I started off the trip not eating red meat but because of Mickey explaining I would be missing out on half the fun, I decided to go for it.

Madrid
SACRISTIA (LA): Calle San Marcos 8, 28004. Tel: 91-5220945. Specializes in fresh seafood including cod cooked in 60 different ways. Reservations required for lunch but recommended for dinner. Visa, MC. Hrs.: Mon.-Sat. 1:30-4pm & 9pm-12midnight. Closed Sundays. 3-course menu del dia which includes wine is 1300ptas for lunch & 2000ptas for dinner. Menu del dia is available Mon.-Thurs. A la carte menu has tapas from 900-2600ptas, starters from 600-1500ptas; assorted codfish dishes from 1750ptas, fresh fish & meats range from 950-3600ptas & desserts range from 400-600ptas. I couldn't get enough of their piramide de chocolate con zumo de naraja al gusto de regaliz (a dessert for chocolate lovers). The Spanish-only menu is printed on old leather. The wine is made by monks. Locals flock to this restaurant for lunch but crowd the bar area at night. This works out perfectly for people who don't smoke and want to eat in the restaurant. Show co-owners Alfonso, Alicia or Valentine this book and get a complimentary after-dinner drink. Metro: Chueca.
